Network switches are used to connect computers in a building to form a local area network (LAN), and to connect to a router that provides access to the Internet.
Back in the mid 1990s, OSL libraries used hubs to connect computers to the OSL telecommunications network. OSL strongly recommends replacing all hubs with switches. Switches provide high-performance 10/100 auto-sensing ports and dedicated bandwidth for each computer connected to network. Switches are programmable from remote locations, making it possible for network administrators and support personnel to update and troubleshoot them without having to go to a site.
OSL recommends Cisco routers and switches. Cisco switches can be connected to older Nortel switches. For planning purposes, you can project the following approximate costs, which includes installation by Atrion:
24 port unit. Catalyst 2950-24. Cost: $1,150
48 port unit. Catalyst 2950-48. Cost: $1,950
80 port unit. Catalyst 2950-80. Cost: $6,800
Contact Peter Bennett for advice on which model of switch is appropriate for your library's needs. Pricing is current as of March 2004. To order a switch, contact the OSL office.
