Because of changes in the grant cycle, most computer purchases now take place in the first quarter of the year. Quarterly group purchases are therefore suspended.
OSL members can purchase systems at any time during the first half of every month. Orders must be faxed or mailed to the Ocean State Libraries Office.
During the first quarter of the year, libraries can piggyback their own orders on the grant purchases.
A ll systems come with Windows Vista Business operating system. Microsoft licensing permits a downgrade to Windows XP Professional. OSL can provide an XP Ghost image for Optiplex systems that were shipped with Vista, if libraries want to use XP instead. All desktop and notebook systems include four years of "ProSupport for IT" (formerly Gold Technical Support) from Dell. Systems with monitors, and notebooks also include "Complete Care" service. The specifications are designed so that these computers will be able to provide at least four full years of life as front-line systems. All desktop systems come with 17" or 19" flat panel monitors (depending on current pricing). Floppy disk drives will no longer be available as standard equipment.
