How to use the Ocean State Libraries e-mail system

OSL Mail is a web-based system that uses Outlook Web Access (OWA for short). It is a full e-mail system with an area called Public Folders where bulletin-board type discussions can take place. There are group acccounts for Circulation, Circulation Heads and Cataloging. Personal accounts for library directors are also available. If you need another copy of the account information, e-mail OSL Support or call the OSL office.

OSL Support recommends using Internet Explorer 6.0 to access the OSL Message system.

  • Open mail.oslri.net/exchange in your browser.
  • In the Enter Network Password type your User Name and Password. Leave the Domain box empty.
  • When you complete the login, you will see "Microsoft Outlook Web Access" in the browser title bar.
  • Depending on how you logged off previously, you will see the local Inbox for this e-mail account, or you will see a list of folders on the left. If you don't see a list of folders on the left side of the OWA window, click on the Folders button.
  • Once you can see the folders, look near the bottom of the list for the folder named Public Folders. Click on the plus sign next to Public Folders
  • Click the icon next to OSL-Message and the folder will open. You can read messages by double-clicking on them.
  • To leave a message, click the New button. A new window will open. Enter the Subject, and type your message. Click the Post button to send it. TIP: If you don't see the Post button when you are sending a message, it means you aren't in the Public Folder area. You are in your Inbox, and will be sending a private e-mail message.
  • To log out, click the Shortcuts button, and then the Logoff button. To complete the log off process and prevent other users from opening your mailbox, you must close the browser window. Click the Close button to finish.

OSL Message Boards Policy

The Steering Committee approved this on July 26, 2007.

Policy for usage of Ocean State Library Message Boards:

The Message Boards (Public Folders) are for use with information directly related to work at Ocean State Libraries and its Member Libraries. There is quite a bit of information already available that members need to read.  Requests for additional crates or envelopes, or questions related to library materials or the ILS usage, offerings of library items available for the taking are all examples of acceptable uses of the list.  In order to respect the time and access of the members of Ocean State Libraries, we ask that the Message Boards are not to be used for:

Non-library related messages of any other kind, for example,

  • Personal, non-work related announcements
  • Solicitations related to non-profits or charities that are not related to OSL or its member libraries.
