Updated: March 1, 2006
Effective February 28, 2006, OSL libraries with Windows servers that are running as Domain Controllers no longer need to set up and maintain DNS Forward Lookup Zones. OSL now has DNS servers (204.17.98.72 and 204.17.98.94) that can handle the needs of the entire network. If you implemented DNS Forward Lookup Zones on your server, the recommendation is that you remove them. Otherwise, new sites such as cataloger.oslri.net will not be accessible.
DNS Forwarders
Open DNS services. Make sure that in "Forwarders" that you enter the OSL DNS addresses (204.17.98.72 and 204.17.98.94). This is the only place in your network configuration that DNS IP addresses outside of your regular scope (e.g., 10.92.73.xx) should be found.
Clearing the DNS Cache
After making DNS changes, you can force the server to update its records:
1. Right click on the server name (of your network server) and select "Clear cache"
2. Right click again on the server name and select "Update Server Data Files"
You may need to clear the DNS cache on client computers:
- Go to a Command prompt
- Then do: IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS
DHCP Scope Changes
According to Microsoft, the correct method is that the IP of the Domain Controller should be the only address listed in DHCP scope for DNS. If your server is set up this way, then you should leave DHCP scope alone. Also, in TCP/IP properties of the server's network connection, the server should be the only IP address listed for DNS.
