OSL Support: Equipment Recycling

PC Old computers, printers, barcode scanners and other electronic equipment present a significant storage and management problem for OSL libraries. Sometimes this equipment can be sold or given away. More often, those Pentium computers that were state of the art in 1998 just sit in a storage room. But a more important problem is that most electronic equipment contains material that is harmful to the environment when disposed of as waste. This means that dumping the equipment in with the regular garbage is not a legal option.

In the past, some non-profit organizations were eager to take donations of old computers. However, rapid changes in technology have left these organizations over-stocked with equipment that they can find no use for.

The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation has a computer recycling program for non-profit organizations. For more information, contact the person listed for business computer recycling.
